      There's an absolutely heartbreaking video that's an on the street interview with a little girl post collapse of the USSR. She can't be older than 10 and she says that she's selling her body for food. The interviewer looks shocked, and asks if any other children are doing that and she just says "everyone. Everyone is doing it."

      I can't find that video now, and it's probably for the best.

      And those women were largely forced into it in the first place because the Soviets guaranteed employment and spent enormous resources on research, academia, and the arts which fizzled and disappeared after the collapse. The stereotype of a Russian mail order bride actually having a PhD exists because it was happened a lot.
