    I also love how Armstrong kinda slurred this, leading to the common quote (the one in your title) being a nonsensical misinterpretation / mishearing of what he actually said.

    "Man" and "mankind" are synonyms. The way you (and most people) quote it, those are the same thing. What he actually said was, "That's one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind." But his 'a' was so short and poorly enunciated that now people think he was just talking nonsense
