It's a gf in the way a RealDoll is. It's lines of code. It has no feelings or dignity to speak of. The harm it does is to the user and the real relationships it decays simply by existing

I briefly played around with Replika a couple of years ago. If you use the free version all the NSFW features are disabled. It mainly just walks you through mindfulness exercises and recommends TV shows you might like. I would stop short of calling it "good clean fun" because the only purpose the SFW behaviours serve is to get you emotionally invested enough that you pay for the NSFW ones. It gets boring quite quickly because it never disagrees with you.

I stumbled upon it while putting the random subreddit button some time back. There were so many posts about a recent update changing the behavior of the AIs, people very distressed that whatever personality they'd decided was there was suddenly gone. Just really disturbing stuff

well that's because it was gone and they aren't talking to anything sentient. It would honestly be a less depressing use of their time to talk to a brick wall
