I’ve been periodically googling for a couple years for any news on this adaptation and there was no update for legit like 2 years. Today they dropped a trailer. Still didn’t see a release date.

I’ve been highly anticipating this for a while. Gabo famously never gave anybody movie rights to adapt this book, but his wife and son gave a somewhat convincing explanation of their reasons for granting Netflix the rights.

First, all the big studios who ever tried getting the rights to the book always wanted to make it in English, which was a non-starter for the author. And also, he didn’t think it could possibly be fit into a 2 or 3 hour movie.

Netflix approached the estate after having produced several series (such as Narcos, etc) that show there’s a global audience for long form (series instead of movie), Spanish language storytelling.

Gabo’s son will be involved in the production somehow as a consultant I guess to try to ensure that it lives up to his dad’s masterpiece. I’m cautiously optimistic

It being in Spanish is def a big positive sign that it will be good. I of course read the English translation but even from that it was very clear that it was a Spanish language story, and any spoken adaptation should be in Spanish.
