He makes Philosophytube and Hbomberguy look like total libs by comparison with how they treat the social phenomenon of conspiracy theorists. I think the main way the two try to empathize and project their own politics onto flat earthers is deeply flawed rather than analyze the social utility of believing and propagating conspiracy theories like it: which is to assert political control over people that would otherwise believe in current (mostly liberal) power structures of education, academia, science bodies, general media, etc. They don’t want to liberate people or share their subconscoius unease with capitalism, but to push their own reactionary politics. Folding Ideas on the other hand doesn’t need to sink to the “I understand you, flat earther” type of pleading rhetoric and give them the liberal benefit of the doubt because he recognizies that people/workers can have politics outside and oppositional to his own.

People in the chapo-community have this same issue of projecting their discontent and awareness of capitalism onto the proletariat. Particularly the supposed distrust of the media they thought people in the UK and US had, which have been shown by both elections to be largely not the case.

You're not wrong, but to be fair to Philotube he was using the topic as a teachable moment to teach actual philosophy and Hbomb has a somewhat successful track record of de-chudding through systematically debunking his opponent's arguments and then appealing to basic human decency through empathy so I can sorta understand why they took the approaches they did, even if they were (as Folding Ideas points out) incomplete.

I've actually grown to liking Hbomb more and PhilosophyTube less and less. Hbomb is definitely a lot more vindictive of just bullying the shit out of the people he covers, while Olie just seems to be purely academic, which doesnt really fit with where I see politics anymore. Like he has a great videos, the one on Marxism and Witchcraft is amazing, but none of his recent stuff even seems interesting.

Ollie's video on Marx and Darwin was pretty good, imo. But you kinda need to keep in mind that Philo tube was set up to teach ppl philosophy, so of course he's gonna be academic. Like, you link his videos to your friends from a liberal arts college and pray that they eventually get so thirsty they become Marxists. And if you've moved past his content, that's hella OK too, cos I think a lot of us are kinda past the point of discussing things academically.

approaching radicalization through trust and tailoring discussion to people’s personal conflicts will always be more effective

In contrast, a perceived instrumentalization will always be alienating.

Really like Folding Ideas. My favourite video is the one where he discusses Annihilation and totally drags the million YouTube videos trying to explain "what the ending REALLY means" while completely ignoring the themes of a work

I've been watching Dan since he was doing weird paper puppet things and talking about Evangelion and I'm so parasocially proud to see my bald baby boy all grown up and doing Michael Moore docs and shit.

My intro to him was where he analyzed that Nazi propaganda movie and pointed out how, to this day, nazis are portrayed in the way that they made up for themselves. Pretty eye-opening

This one is really good and i would say it goes well with the qanon anonymous episode about the new age spiritist to fascist pipeline

This really opened my eyes to the depth of the QAnon fuckery. I thought QAnon was just in the chud-to-fash pipeline, not just straight up fash itself. Considering whether I need to listen to QAA in self-defense to stay educated on this shit.
