Edit: More recent update on his situation after a fund raiser raised enough for him to avoid homelessness:

"The real issue isn’t whether or not someone like me should be able to access MAID. It’s whether or not we, as a society, wish to continue making people’s lives miserable and hopeless enough that suicide – assisted or otherwise – becomes a viable option. Or whether we are willing to choose to take steps that would make these people’s lives bearable enough that they won’t need to."

Edit 2: Medical assistance suicide under Capitalism and under the hands of the government is a horrible idea without any proper safeguards from abuse https://twitter.com/Lefty_Mind/status/1595443123324436481

This is just awful, gotta agree with several other posters. I'd seen some arguments in the past the elderly people might be pressured by their heirs, but always thought that was a bit fringe; even if you're that greedy it seems like a good way to get removed from a will.

But seeing how, in practice, it ends up with the government killing people who can't afford rent and don't want to be homeless, or who have a disability they can't afford to pay for accommodations for, it's just so nightmarish. Given that the people designing guardrails against this theoretically are the same ghouls who benefit from abusing it, I'm not sure any government can be trusted with it.

    In short, :kkkanada:
