I agree outright civil war is unlikely.

I think more likely we could see something similar to the Jim Crow era emerge where state and local governments become co-opted by the far right and so you see local on the ground rule by the far right awkwardly coexisting within the federal system.

Like, in Jim Crow all of the south was de facto one party rule under the Democrats and you’re seeing the same alignment happen now under the GOP. Under Jim Crow, criminal militias coordinated with sympathetic local law enforcement to use terror as the tool to enforce white conservative rule. The feds turned a blind eye by calling this a state issue for state law enforcement to deal with.

I think something more like this is more probable. The federal US won’t disintegrate, they’ll just paper over it and continue business as usual, but on the state level we will see these right wing militarists take over by taking over the politically dominant GOP, law enforcement, with the role of the militias being to terrorize other groups into submission rather than to fight a pitched battle against the feds.

I hadn't really thought of it that way but that makes a lot of sense. You're right we are already starting to see it happen particularly in border states. And with all the new bounty programs for snitching on trans people and people needing abortions it's actively being encouraged. However that is running counter to idea that they are looking for a catalyst to start a shooting war with the feds. On the other hand no one has ever accused chuds of having coherent thoughts.
