I know I post a lot about robot combat, but this is too incredible not to share.
Project Liftoff historically has been what is called a "Melty Brain" robot. Its primary weapon is to spin around with spikes on the outside, using computers to carefully control the drive motors to combine rapid spinning with controlled translational movement. This differs from "Shell Spinners", which use a separate weapon motor to spin a shell covering the bot and giving the appearance of the whole thing spinning. Melty Brains are basically the most complicated thing you can make that is actually really effective - turns out having 100% of your mass also be your weapon is pretty dope.
Anyways, Team Liftoff took it to a new level in a recent event. Project Liftoff is now a fully autonomous 3lb combat robot. You flip a switch, and it fights better than most humans could (melties can be hard to control, even with their computers). There are manual overrides, of course.
Sorry for rambling, this thing is just really cool.
