    Strategically it didn't achieve anything and the planned invasion likely wouldn't have had to happen. The Soviets were pushing in and their reconstruction, probably akin to East Germany, would be better than the one-party right wing state that the US installed. The shock of it hasn't deterred anything either, apart from not using nuclear weapons even if we still stockpile them. If the Manhattan Project had succeeded in time for the Doolittle raid then I think there would be a good case for their usage but by August 1945 they're just kind of spectacle without gain.

      Yeah the taboo against using nuclear weapons didn't happen instantly. The US was totally willing to use them for several years after WW2.
