The real reason the Cuban Missile Crisis was a disaster is because Fidel didn't immediately fire them all at Miami. That is all. :no-choice:

i hate that it's even called the cuban missile crisis. it should rightly be called the turkey missile crisis, since turkey got couped, folded into NATO, and got american missiles stationed there. American nukes that close to Moscow is what compelled Khrushchev to put soviet missiles in Cuba. But the Americans tell their story with the first half cut off and title it in such a way as to ignore this truth.
Perhaps the most ubiquitous type of lie perpetuated by both American history and American media is the lie of omission
it's very clever. when you straight up misrepresent facts it's very easy to debunk, but when you lie by omission it doesn't seem like a lie. You can always plausibly dismiss the details you omitted as unimportant or irrelevant.

My high school teacher only mentioned the turkey part when we got to the end of the crisis, and just casually mentioned that there were ‘secret’ missile bases that just happened to be in turkey which the US diplomatically traded away to avert war
Now that I think about it, I believe that this is what I was taught as well :agony-shivering:
Something something yellow parenti quote
amazing sleight of hand. very compelling trickery from your teacher there. That's a sign they were even more ideologically motivated than someone who merely omits the detail out of ignorance.
brushing over is frankly better than I expected
I honestly don't even remember being taught aboutbthe CMC in high school, our education system fucking sucks in every possible way
Same with Suez Canal Crisis.
Nice euphemism for UK and Israel invading Egypt with naked ambition to seize the canal for themselves, and getting owned when the Egyptians sabotaged the canal instead of letting them have it.
