I finished reading Jojolion a couple days ago and I want to write all my thoughts about it. The TLDR: most of the time when I was reading Jojolion, I was thinking about Steel Ball Run, because I wanted to read Steel Ball Run again, because its better than Jojolion.

Full spoilers for Jojolion ahead. I'm going to try to refrain from comparing to Steel Ball Run in every sentence, and probably fail.

The plot

So the plot is pretty intriguing to begin with. A man wakes up naked with no memories, a star-shaped mark on his shoulder, a stand ability and a new friend named Yasuho (and four testicles). I think mystery is a good fit for Jojo's, given that solving a mystery is the main mechanic of stand battles. The mystery in Jojolion starts off pretty strong, with Josuke being somehow connected to Yoshikage Kira, and the Higashikita household having some shady goings on. I liked the idea of Norisuke being an antagonist early on, but I also like him as an ally. By far my favourite part of the story was seeing Josuke and Yasuho track down Josuke's past, and the flashback showing Josefumi and Kira is my favourite part of Jojolion. Its also where the story peaks for a bit, because after that, there's a pretty significant drop in quality.

It reminds me of the first part of Diamond is Unbreakable ironically enough, because there's no main antagonist, only random, seemingly disconnected villains of the week who have one character trait and then they die. I didn't care for any of the rock humans during the story, and they're only really interesting in retrospect when you know who they were and what they were doing. So the storyline about Josuke's past is the best one, and when that's resolved you're only left with the rock humans, the intrigue around Joubin, and the Rokakaka storylines, none of which are as compelling.

That said, I do really like the final fight against Wonder of U. Araki is consistently great at writing interesting beginnings and satisfying endings, and Jojolion is no different, except for the very end, during the conclusion. The story just... ends, in the middle of a scene. Like even one more panel where Josuke chose a cake would have made the scene stronger in my opinion.

Overall I like that Araki tried to do the opposite of Steel Ball Run; there's one location, a wide cast of characters, and a plot centered around mystery rather than conflict. But there's a major lull in the second half of the story that really drags it down

The characters

Jojolion has a very wide cast of recurring characters, moreso than any other part of Jojo. There's Josuke, Yasuho, Holly, Norisuke, Joubin, Joshu, Daiya, cvwqsbnxjyt201 I just spilled cider on my keyboard for fucks sake, Hato, Kaato, Tsurugi, Tooru, Rai, Kei, Kira and Josefumi. Most of them are pretty well characterised, and my favourite character is Yasuho. I like how she doesn't need to help Josuke at all but she just wants to, I like her relationships with Tooru, and Tsurugim I think her stand is cool and I like how she's a pretty normal person. She reminds me of Koichi in that way.

I think Mamezuku Rai is such a strange addition to the story. He shows up halfway through to be a main character but he's not very interesting at all. His stand is just Stone Free but with wires, he lives like that one dude in a tower in part 4, and his personality, aside from being cold and calculating, is pretty non-existant.

I also think Josuke is a bit underwhelming. Aside from his drive to discover his past, he doesn't have a lot going for him. I like the bit where he makes up a terrible song to sing to Yasuho, because he doesn't know any songs, and I wish there was more of that in the story, where he was just very clueless about things but not embarrassed about it. His main thing is that he is driven and determined and willing to kill to achieve his goals, which is exactly what Johnny was, except Johnny was more interesting because he was a broken and quite selfish man, and he's also hotter than Josuke. Josuke is just a bit flat.

I do really like the Higashikita household, and I wish they got a little bit more time on screen. All their interactions with each other are enjoyable, the curse is very interesting, and I really like how the fight against Tooru makes them all come together in a pretty fucked up way. I like at the end where they have to come together and try to heal, with Hato taking over as the de facto leader after Jobin and Kaato die, and Norisuke is in the hospital.

I thought Kei Nijimura was intriguing and I wanted to learn more about her, but she disappeared halfway through the story and then came back only to die immediately. Her character seems like such wasted potential; we've never had sibling Jojo's before, but now that we have them, the Jojo's sister is barely in the story at all.

Tooru kinda comes out of nowhere, but I like how he's a bit charismatic but basically just normal.

The side villains are pretty universally terrible. Araki has a consistent problem with writing side villains who are just evil and love to talk about killing, or stoic and only show up to give exposition and die. Damo Tamaki is pretty threatening and charismatic, but he's best in his flashback where he talks with Kira and Josefumi, and he's not in enough of the story to be a major character. There's Poor Tom, who I hate, the two weird doctors, the twins, Yotsuya, Dolomiti, and I'm pretty sure there's others that I can't remember, but the point is, none of them are interesting at all.

The fights

The Wonder of U fight is great, as is to be expected from a Jojo finale. Every part of Jojo saves the best fight for last (except for Golden Wind, that finale wasn't great) , and Wonder of U is really threatening in a new way. I really like how it can't be pursued, but if the heroes give up, they'll live; that makes a lot of sense for Tooru, who wants to pursue his goals unmolested. I really like how the Rokakaka plays into the final fight, and how it ends up defeating Tooru. The spin returning was a very nice surprise.

Other than that though, I think a lot of the fights are pretty whatever. I like the one with Yasuho and Tsurugi against whoever they were fighting, and I like a lot of stands conceptually, like Paisley Park, Nut King's Call, and King Nothing. I don't like that Josuke just stopped using his bubble to remove the properties of things halfway through the series, and only used his bubbles to suspend objects. The Ozone Baby fight was pretty cool, its very interesting to see a three way stand battle, California King Bed and the beetle fight were decent, and honestly that's about it for fights I enjoyed. Its weird how Araki managed to make just about every fight in Golden Wind really good (until the end), but there's a lot of mid and bad ones in the middle of Stone Ocean, the start of Steel Ball Run, and all of Jojolion.

Overall my favourite parts of Jojolion were all the ones that chronologically happened before the story even started: the flashbacks to Kira and Josefumi, Johnny, and Lucy and Joseph. It was very underwhelming following Steel Ball Run, and although I enjoyed some characters, its a far cry from Araki's best works. Jojolion doesn't come very high on my ranking of Jojo parts. That said, I like that the ending leaves room for the story to continue, and I hope to see characters from Jojolion return in Jojolands and beyond.
