During WWI there was a movement in Britain called the White Feather Movement in which women would publicly give white feathers to any man not in uniform as a symbol of shame and cowardice.
The fact that many of the men who got those white feathers were discharged wounded, soldiers on leave, or workers in essential war industries didn't seem to discourage the women.
