Rime of the ancient mariner is a good example, but I didn't want to stick a style/genre on it because I'm sure there's stuff outside the genre that does something similar. Long songs telling some sort of story.
Nightfall in Middle-Earth by Blind Guardian is a whole album inspired by Tolkien's Silmarillion.
Fear of a Dead Planet by Planet of the Dead is another album inspired by Herbert's Dune.
Both are heavy metal albums as that's what I'm usually into.
