it's a masterpiece. the music. the stylized graphics. the materia combination and materia leveling system. equipment bonuses. the story. the side shit with hunting weapons, minigames @ gold saucer, etc. chocobo capture/raise system. there's even crossdressing / cute girl feminizing you which is 90s-anime wet dream. and beating the shit out of a pimp.
i mean you're legit eco-terrorist blowing up the capital of big oil and killing off its execs. lets fucking go.
there's fair criticism to be made of the game (cid is problematic), but not much. shit is absolutely art from start to finish
I've never been able to 'get' FF7. I grew up alongside the games, and enjoyed all I played. But when FF7 came it and was universally acclaimed and stuff, I remember playing just like, 3 hours of it and being so confused as to why people liked it. 3 hours probably isn't enough to give it a fair shake, but I was still pretty young, and I just remember instantly being like "wait, this is what people are going nuts about?"
I've since tried it a few times emulated, but haven't been able to get into it (though, admittedly, its graphics a presentation are rough in comparison to modern games.)
Though, generally, I really haven't been able to get into any JRPG that's 3D. there's a few series, like Star Ocean, where I loved the early games, and had 0 interest in the 3d ones. I don't think I've enjoyed a FF game since 6.
