Does this make a difference with the crying?
Just be like me and dice up the onion through the tears then run out of the room screaming like you've been maced and cry into a towel every time you cut onions, and i fucking love onions
I love onions so much, and cutting one in half (not even diced!) yesterday caused tears to stream down my cheeks. Sacrifice for our art
Nope. But other things do!
The crying is from vapors that basically create sulfuric acid in your eyes. To reduce that, you can decrease the amount of vapor released or prevent released vapor from getting in your eyes.
Two good tricks for releasing less vapor;
Use a sharp knife. Dull knives clobber more cells, releasing vapor.
Avoid the butt until the very end. It's got more of tge irritant.
Three tricks for reducing it getting to your eyes:
Cut in a well-ventilated space or even outdoors. Open a window, turn on a fan. It'll disperse the bad stuff.
Light a candle right next to the cutting board. This only kind of works and i kinda wonder if it's only because it creates a convection current, so same as having a little fan.
Wear goggles. This definitely works but i personally don't do it (I just open a window). For people who really hate onion eyes.
well that sounds way more metal
no i still cry every night before bed
all jking aside it apparently helps with it because you don't pierce the bulb/thing that makes you cry until the very end
Use a wet knife. Give the onion a brief rinse before the final 'into tiny bits' cuts.
it helps some, but you're still going to nick the root sometimes.
I usually cut them in half and rinse under cold water while bending them a bit so the water can get in between layers. I believe putting them in the fridge for a couple hours before cutting also reduces/eliminates the crying.
