The magic system in this game is still the coolest ever put in an RPG

Just learning about this jank ass game. Apparently there is Two Worlds (original), a better received Two Worlds II (original), and then a Two Worlds II HD ("engine upgrade").

What's the 411 on these games? Which should I play to experience a jank ass old Euro RPG?

Neither are worth playing if you don't have nostalgia for it.

I've always been fond of Two worlds 1 whereas 2 is a bit pants and visually is just nauseating to look at in every respect.

If you wanna give it a go you can pirate the gog versions of both games

You almost deterred me but I went ahead and gave the 1st game a shot. Sadly, I could not get past the splash load screen on Linux.

You need a hidden beta branch for it to work on linux the main install is borked. The above works on my steam deck.

Not sure if the gog version even has that release.

I ultimately got the Windows version to work with Wine anyway :) Just needed to install a few packages from Winetricks (for future reference if this somehow ever comes up for anyone: devenum quartz wmp9 xact)

Edit: hm well i guess i didn't get the FMV videos to work. not sure why on that one but whatever :)

fmv videos need to be replaced with the wmv versions. Whatever crazy codec they used doesn't even work on windows anymore. Not missing much there's like 3 cutscenes for the whole game.
