On one hand, I think this has always happened- people will develop horny feelings for anything and everyone. Nothing you can do about someone drawing smut about characters they like. The thing that's changed is that there's a cottage industry of smut artisans, but I guess porn animations are different from 2D artists since they are directly using the assets from the original work.

There are pornographic spoofs of all kinds of visual media going back hundreds of years, and before that there were pornographic poems and stories riffing on popular contemporary tales. iirc a lot of political pamphlets back in the early modern and medieval period had some kind of smut included to get people interested. I wouldn't be shocked if some wood block carver was stamping out Tale of Genji erotica a month after the first copies of the book started circulating.
It's probably different when it's the same exact character model you spent hundreds of hours 3D scanning, mocapping and rigging, especially when big budget modern games tend to use real human actors as bases for their models, and especially, as I said, if the character isn't even meant to be seen as sexy in any way.
