P-38J Lightning was my favorite fighter plane as a kid for no other reason than the NES video game "1943 The Battle of Midway".
A long while back I volunteered for this local warplane museum where I met this old USAAF veteran who was in logistics during the war. I talked about how he would do ferry flights that took aircraft across the atlantic, he spoke very highly of the P-61 and said it was his favorite, IIRC he enjoyed the robustness and stability of the type. He would later participate in the berlin airlift which is how he met his wife, she was a nice lady and also volunteered for the museum.
