How's the launch? Steam reviews seem pretty mixed and everyone is saying it was pushed out too early. Rough, I was looking forward to this

This video covers it pretty well, and matches my experience with the Early Access release.

TL;DW: Some serious performance issues while piloting even medium-sized craft. The Kraken is back with a vengeance. Lots of hilarious bugs, including people launching the entire Kerbal Space Center into space. The price really isn't justifiable for it in its current state, but if they can nail down whatever is destroying the performance, there's massive potential in the game. There's so much that's way better than KSP1, even with lots of visual mods.

Isn't this like every indie game released through early access? Do any of them ever actually get improved performance?

I've avidly played the first game, but have chosen not to purchase the second one as of yet based upon what I've seen. $50 is far too steep for early access, especially given the features missing from the game at present (including features currently in the first game) as well as the myriad amount of bugs with the game. I think that a lot of people went in expecting it to be KSP1 2.0 until the features came out. If it was like that I'd say it'd be an easy purchase, but in its current state I doubt it's going to retain anyone that currently owns KSP1. Personally, I'd say you should check back in on the game when they reach a landmark you're interested in such as colonies or interstellar travel to see if it's been smooth'd out.

I don't really see the point of getting KSP2 right now unless you want to do free QA for the developers. Right now, it's just an implementation of the baseline game features in the new engine, nothing new compared to vanilla KSP1.
