The Nakba, commemorated annually on this day as "Nakba Day", was the destruction of Palestinian society and homeland in 1948 following Israel's creation. Nakba Day protests take place around the world and have been attacked by Israel.

The foundational events of the Nakba took place during and shortly after the 1947-1949 Palestine war, including 78% of Mandatory Palestine being declared as Israel, the exodus of 700,000 Palestinians, the depopulation and destruction of over 500 Palestinian villages and subsequent geographical erasure, the denial of the Palestinian right of return, and the creation of permanent, stateless Palestinian refugees.

Although May 15th had been used as an unofficial commemoration of the Nakba since 1949, Nakba Day was formalized in 1998 after Yasser Arafat proposed that Palestinians should mark the 50th anniversary of the Nakba during the First Intifada.

The Nakba was a key event in the development of Palestinian culture and is a foundational symbol of Palestinian identity, along with "Handala", a ten-year old cartoon character developed by Naji al-Ali; the keffiyeh, a checkered black and white scarf worn around the head; and the "symbolic key" (many Palestinian refugees have kept the keys to the homes they were forced to flee).

On Nakba Day 2011, Palestinians and other Arabs from the West Bank, the Gaza Strip, Lebanon, and Syria marched towards their respective borders, or ceasefire lines and checkpoints in Israeli-occupied territories, to mark the event. At least twelve Palestinians and supporters were killed and hundreds wounded as a result of shootings by the Israeli Army.

"In resisting the Nakba, the Palestinians have struck at the heart of the Zionist project that insists that the Nakba be seen as a past event. In resisting Israel, Palestinians have forced the world to witness the Nakba as present action; one that, contrary to Zionist wisdom, is indeed reversible." - Palestinian scholar Joseph Massad

My dog has been acting really strange today and it's worrying me a bit.

She's a 7-year-old labrador, usually she spends most of her day sleeping, lying around in the kitchen hoping food will fall down or showing off her toys so people will play with her. She was like that this morning too, but since 10-11 am she's been super on edge. She's not sleeping, she's always staring at one of us and when someone tries to pet her, she backs away. She has never been the most cuddly dog and generally doesn't much care for pets, only belly rubs, but she has never done this before. She has never been anxious, quite the opposite, she's always been a fearless daredevil who loves playfighting with dogs much bigger than herself. My mom gave her a carrot earlier and she didn't want it, which is also extremely unusual.

She still ate her lunch normally and when I went for a walk with her this afternoon she also behaved normally. But once we came back, she was all on edge and anxious again. She is not visibly injured or anything. I have no idea if there's something inside our home that's bothering her of it's some kind of sickness, but something is up with her. If she's still like this tomorrow we might take her to the vet. Any dog owners who have experienced something similar?

Her nose is normal. She keeps going to a certain room in our house and looking at us expectantly. I think there's something she's smelling that's bothering her but we have no idea what. My first thought was gas leak or carbon monoxide or whatever but we could reliably rule that out. I checked if there were dead animals around, nothing. If she saw an intruder or anything at night she would 100% bark, but she's just standing there and staring at us.

I have no idea what's going on. Can't stress enough that in the nearly 8 years we've had her, she's never done anything like this. She hasn't slept all day. I'm really worried.

i wish my partner was home or could login (they are on the road) because they are super experienced with all things dogs. but yeah i sounds like she's alerted to something that is agitating her. only thing i can think is to take her out for a few hours and see what happens.

that way you can rule in or out an environmental thing.
