Muc-Off especially. I mean props to them for making their shit biodegradable (if it actually is) but I have seriously not encountered anything from dirt to effluvial grime that a spray bottle with water/dish soap mix and a rag didn't take care of it brilliantly.

Like the only thing is really, really mucked up cassettes or sprockets and chains. Chains clean really easily with steel wool and the really, really mucked up cassettes just get tossed in vinegar for a bit and scrubbed with steel wool.

There's definitely LBS admiration that ventures into sucking off small (or not so small) business owners, but OTOH with a competent bike shop you pay for knowledge.

I mean if you can google and are at least somewhat mechanically inclined it gets pointless but most people aren't and that goes triple for bicycles because in much of the world they have very little cultural memory, so to speak. Nobody knows shit about it, basically, on a societal level.

I think the more apt comparison in parts and for the people where this whole "Go to your LBS!" get's thrown around is more the split between "Pay $10 for one tube that fits" vs. "pay $30 dollars for 4 of which one fits because the amazon listing of "REDONJI BICYCLE INNER TUBE 26" 28" 29" FITS ALL BICYCLES" is basically a scam.

If you're rebuilding a frame, you just ain't the target audience of the advice.
