He didn't care for the remake much and thought it was a bland retread with its edges sanded down and preferring the overtly campy elements of the original

      I don't think he particularly liked either. He was never a fan of any of the old Resident Evils prior to 4, but loved also 7 since it presented a Resident Evil 4-like fresh start for the series and was disappointed that the follow-up, RE2Remake went back to retreading old ground. IIRC he liked 2RE more than 3RE.

      I don't think he was all that fond of 8 either since he felt it cribbed too much from 4. I guess Yahtzee just likes Resident Evil when it's doing something completely new

        Kind of odd for RE2’s case given how much got changed from the original and it feels like it’s own game to an extent (eg. The third person perspective actually makes the game harder, even if it deceptively looks like it’s cribbing from RE4).

        Aside from that, it makes sense. RE3 was stripped down of content from the original and felt short as a consequence (or so I’ve been told) while RE4 doesn’t fundamentally change mechanically. Only so much you can do.
