My first series was on Cartoon Network - Gundam Wing.

And let me tell you, as a kid that shit was not appropriate. My parents would walk by and see robots blow up and had no idea what it was a bunch of people dying in horrific explosions. had no idea what was going on because it was so dense. But I remembered enough to like Death Scythe the most.

I started to hit puberty around the time G-Gundam started airing in the US and that was another wild ride. I haven't gone back because the 'international fighter' anime was not a good look (Tequila-Gundam represented Neo-Mexico) but I do remember the overall story as being a lot easier to digest. It's kinda silly, but I liked this series more because fewer people died in that one. And because of the blatant fanservice.

I watched the original series and the movies once I got old enough to look up anime online. I've watched a lot more since then, sometimes bits and pieces, but I feel like I'm gravitating toward the franchise again with WfM.

So, what do other people think about Gundam?

The look of it reminds me of my first mecha anime: Vision of Escaflowne

I tried going back and watching Gundam Wing. Too much melodrama filler.

what I recall of what little Gundam I have watched the only thing that isn't melodrama is the giant robots (who are still vehicles for it)

Yeah. And the stock footage gets to be too much. Recycling the three Leos blowing up all the time

The Universal Century is the best Gundam gets.

Zeta is great, but I think the original edges out slightly better than it.

0080 and the 08th MS Team are fantastic for different reasons.

G Gundam is way better than it should be. Domon Kasshu my beloved.

After War Gundam X is very underrated. It's actually one of my favorites.

Witch from Mercury is promising, and I'm looking forward to the second cour.

Have you seen Turn A Gundam? It's probably the best in the franchise by a long shot (especially if you've watched a lot of Gundam)

My favorite gundam is SD Gundam! It's the only one I watched full seasons of and I had a bunch of the toys for it. I also saw like an episode or two of gundam seed. I liked the designs in seed but everyone tells me it sucks so :shrug-outta-hecks:

I was always more of a Transformers/Voltron/TMNT kid growing up. But I discovered and fell in love with Visions of Escalflowne for its mix of high fantasy, chivalric romance, and giant robot fights. Also, Tekkaman Blade will hold a special place in my heart, simply because of all the time I spent watching it Saturday mornings as a kid.

Witch From Mercury has been fun. The ending of the first season was so brutally stark in such a refreshing way that I can't not come back for season 2. But I'm really noticing how the "High Schoolers In War Machines" plot lines have run thin for me as I've gotten older. Couldn't really make it through Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn because it just felt so cliche.

I love the premise of the Near-Earth Space Opera. But I'm increasingly more of an Expanse / Star Trek guy, now that the magical realism of That One Special Robot Armor plot arc has run thin.

G Gundam is at least equally horrible to every culture except maybe Japan. The American Gundam is fucking hilarious, cowboy boxer. :amerikkka: Also the French one... :france-cool: .

Edit I forgot the fucking windmill Gundam for the Dutch.

Honestly it's so good though, Domon is an incredible hot blooded protagonist, the stupid trace system is hilarious and genius :panting:

08th MS is a personal fav.

After the toonami shows, I actually got into fansubs with SEED, which is just a goofy ass remake of the UC story. However it's got a lot of fun stuff, including the most plot armored protagonist that's ever existed. Also the first season does the "ending song fade in over the end of the episode" really well, some incredible hits there.

And as others have said, WfM is a breath of fresh air. Suletta will be back this week to smash more tomatoes.
