Lemmy is a collection of websites. I'd describe lemmygrad.ml as more ideologically stringent, but lemmy.ml has been intended to be a general interest instance since inception (though it is still administrated by Communists and they do remove outright reactionary shit). Very early in the project, before Lemmygrad, these were already split into lemmy.ml and communism.lemmy.ml.

It seems like lemmy.ml is running up against the limits of what its VPS can handle though, and the admins are recommending for people to start / join other instances. There is an opportunity for some shitlib instance to seize the mantle (though they will be far behind Dessalines and Nutomic on the technical know-how).

If Lemmy takes off, it will probably end up like Mastodon. Gigantic instances run by shitlibs and inhabited by hordes of annoying nerds, but with many pockets of cool shitposters to keep the libs up at night. The shitlib admins will only be able to hide them from their users, but they won't have the power to destroy them.

That whole Mastodon thing just disappeared after the brief window after Musk bought Twitter. People said they were leaving and disappeared without a trace. I figured I'd start seeing links to Mastodon on various social media sites, and it just hasn't happened. As far as I know, they're still there, happy to talk to each other without being bothered by chuds.
