If you use libre software, you are now and forever a 'woke communist'.

Libs and Chuds in shambles.

It's kind of shocking to see a tech guy who isn't a reactionary, because like 99.99% of them are (and before you mention the whole open source thing, Hitler quotes in BSD and RMS' whole existence).

Better than that Swedish guy who used to be in the cracker group Fairlight and add the message "Kill a commie for Mommy" to their intros. He moved to the US and became some kind of local Republican politician.

edit: Linus' dad used to be a communist BTW, but now he's just another example of a Finnish guy who was a communist in the 70s and then became a neoliberal NATO dork. Many such cases!

Not saying there aren't a lot of reactionaries in tech, but there's also a shitload of trans communists.

All the famous ones pretty much are, and the ones I've personally run into are mainly neoliberal/libertarian psychos.

I think this is confusing tech guy (CEO of watr, the app that delivers you water to your house) with tech guy (codes linux kernels in his free time)

It's not even true for the first ones I don't think but especially the second ones aren't reactionary. Them often being misogynist or racist doesn't really make them the retvrn type we gotta pull the clock back type people

there also this recounting of the splitting away and rebranding of libre software to open source: https://thebaffler.com/salvos/the-meme-hustler

While free software was meant to force developers to lose sleep over ethical dilemmas, open source software was meant to end their insomnia.

The coup succeeded. Stallman’s project was marginalized. But O’Reilly and his acolytes didn’t win with better arguments; they won with better PR. To make his narrative about open source software credible to a public increasingly fascinated by the Internet, O’Reilly produced a highly particularized account of the Internet that subsequently took on a life of its own. In just a few years, that narrative became the standard way to talk about Internet history, giving it the kind of neat intellectual coherence that it never actually had.

Obviously the GPL isn’t actually a free software license

        Wait why

When hearing about someone committing sexual assault, I personally wouldn't do any kind of dumb pedantism about whether it's actually sexual assault or about what kinds of rape allegations are ”absurd”, but maybe that's just me :shrug-outta-hecks:

Stallman also said in 2006 that pedophilia doesn't really harm children.
