Found out recently Crimea was an independent country after the fall of the Soviet Union until they were overthrown by Ukraine. So they were part of it for like 20 years
No yeah for sure. Not saying that is the reason they should be able to. I just mean that the short time frame gives context to the situation and is part of why they were so determined to leave Ukraine. That and the Ukrainianization upon the population of primarily ethnic Russians.
if Ukraine really wanted to join NATO they'd relinquish claims on territory Russia claims, and sponsor 'independent' proxy governments for any remaining territories/gains they make
this would be really funny to me because there'd be like 3 proxy governments on each side but then we'd all die when Ukraine entered NATO so please don't do that
Ukraine was always ineligible for membership because they were disputing the territory of Crimea

Not quite independent, just autonomous with Ukraine.
doesn't matter land belongs to the people who have it. 5000 years or 2 years makes no difference

The civil war in the Donbass where out of control neo nazi army regiments have tried to kill them also contextualises why they may wish to leave
For a short while, like Gagauzia.

i don't think any geopolitical conflict is truly complete until a proxy government sets up a proxy government :sicko-hyper:
