What's the current state of private/self-hosted servers for Genshin? I refuse to play a gacha game out of principle, even staying F2P (been there, done that), but if there's a relatively playable solution where I can bypass that I might give it a whirl.

It's kinda meh from what I understand, probably not worth the hassle at the moment.

They exist, but it's a bit wonky to get everything to work properly and most servers aren't set up for you to progress through the game like normal in terms of storyline, exploration etc., they're more so made for veteran players who want to play with everything unlocked. You also won't be able to save your progress in-between version updates, which happens every 6 weeks.

Thanks for the info! Guess I'll sit tight for the time being.

I imagine reverse engineering a server for something like Genshin is a monumental task, but someday I'd love to try my hand at reverse engineering a simpler game like one of the rhythm game gachas I used to play where server communication is pretty much limited to menus (checking your roster, purchasing items, submitting scores, etc.). Still early days as far as RE and network analysis skills go, though---trying to find a project that I find genuinely interesting and rewarding but would also be manageable as a first effort.
