Basically I'm asking if its common for people to make new communities for underdiscussed topics here, and what mechanisms are in place for that.

    From the /c/commrequest sidebar:

    Community and moderator requests and nominations for unmodded communities.

    No bulk requests. That means one comm request per post. This is so we can sort out their interest individually.

    Community request posts with enough upbears and a volunteer for moderation willing to submit an application will be created during mod drives.

    Yeah but for the most part it's pretty pointless. There is utility in having a unique comm for people who are actually part of a unique community who want to have discussions with just those community members (c/neurodiverse, c/vegan, etc) or for situations topics where you don't have to stretch your imagination to picture someone visiting that specific community to see a bunch of frequently posted content that is of a specific type (c/movies, c/music etc) but mostly we have a ton of comms that are barely used for content that ought to just go in c/main.
