My gut feeling is that instead of swinging politically based on economic needs they swing politically based on self-actualisation. The ones chasing prestige in society (journos being the most obvious) swing bougie while the ones chasing other forms of self-actualisation through things like art swing left.
They're workers except their work is comfortable and well paid enough for their economic needs to be mostly met. So different issues end up taking the forefront in their decisions. If they don't have aspirations to become boug then self actualisation and other needs take the forefront.
