Hello users of Hexbear, we are excited to announce a batch of community creation and a call to action for anyone interested in moderating existing communities or one of the potential new ones

Below will be a list of questions for any interested moderators, in the comments will be a potential new community with the option for a user to comment a downbear under it. In the event that the community reaches a number that has a higher upbear than downbear greater than 10 it will be created.

I will be unfeaturing and locking this thread in approximately 12 hours, so far we will be making: c/theory, c/indigenous, c/fakenews, c/mycology, c/fashion, c/hobby, c/fediverse, c/librehab, c/travel, c/gamedev, c/tabletop, c/maritime. I will be asking the users who requested these communities to send in mod applications, if there is no active mod and/or no activity by the end of july they will be deleted.

While not requiring a moderator initially they will be subject to new community deletion guidelines, if a community does not have an active moderator (not an admin) and/or any activity it will be deleted. Some of our legacy communities may not be subject to this new community deletion guideline and may be locked due to inactivity or no mod team, deleted/locked communities may be restored/unlocked at a later day, if sufficient interest arises.

Going forward we will be more responsive to community creation but will be quite strict with the community deletion guideline. The reason for this shift is that we are now able to easily delete communities as well as restore deleted communities.

Element information

Element is a messaging app that lets you talk to people over the Matrix protocol.

To get started, check out this link, where you can choose to either download Element for your platform or, if on a computer, open it in a browser ("Launch Element Web").

The instructions that follow are for the desktop application and the web application, but the process is similar on all apps:

  • Press "Create Account"
  • We host our own Matrix server, so if you want you can change matrix.org to chapo.chat. This is completely optional; users who sign up with a matrix.org username can still talk to people with chapo.chat username. (Note: It is chapo.chat, not hexbear.net. Also, registrations aren't always open on chapo.chat; if they're not, just create an account on matrix.org)
  • Fill in a username and password
  • Hit register, and you're done!

          May I ask specifically what risk you're afraid of?

          There are loads of people wishing for and cheering on the deaths of dozens of the most powerful and wealthy people on this planet

          There are people describing how they would/want to commit extremely illegal crimes

          There are people that have admitted about the petty crimes that they've done

          There are people that have cheered on extreme acts of crime

          I don't see how a drugs comm could expose Hexbear to any more risk than it already has

          Also, talking about drugs or getting high isn't even illegal. Only current possession is

              i've been active in communities like that for a long time and could help. i usually am the resident harm reduction/drug education person in threads where it comes up and i can comment anyways

          What are you opinions on a harmreduction comm or a tripsit type comm that doesn't give medical advice but would help people currently experiencing a bad trip talk to someone with a similar mindset/beleifs to theirs (too many chuds on the official tripsit sites unfortunately)

      yeah not sure why we can't have a drugs comm if there's going to be a cybernetics comm and a ships comm. c/drugs is one of the ones that has been requested constantly by various users in the last 3 years. @CARCOSA@hexbear.net
