Yeah, it's pretty obvious to me at this point they want to have it both ways where they can engage in these sorts of lurid death fantasies but also retreat to much more defensible ground of scientific predictions when this sort of doomporn fanfic stuff gets called out as unhelpful. It sorta reminds me of this same phenomena that was noted to play out with COVID
