This. You really can't overstate how much of an advantage it is to already have a massive network, to have massive amounts of money to push ads, to have massive amounts of money to put your app or whatever the fuck at the top of the list in the walled garden. The Lemmyverse is the biggest non-corporate competitor to Reddit and a dozen other things and the entire user base is, like, what, a few thousand people?

Also googling mastadon will result in seeing the band. Googling threads or twitter alternative will lead to threads.

Also google loves suppressing results for open source software its impossible to find even if you know what you're looking for cos they more or less block it from showing.

That and mastadon itself isn't exactly user friendly to computer plebs since mastadon has instances then you need a client that's not call mastadon to connect to it and that'll kill most users there. If it takes more than 10 seconds to use the service then people quit trying. Threads is linked to an insta account which most people already have so its effortless to sign up.

Googling mastodon for me (even if I misspell it as mastadon) immediately leads me to 3 different links related to the federated twitter clone, a wikipedia page for the animal, and then as a sub-link from there the wikipedia page for the band
