Later on in my conversation with them they support Starmer and call Blair's New Labour "leftist". Claiming I am just factionalist and that it's factionalism to not call the neoliberal fuckbags left wing when they are blatantly centre right.

If you hear someone say something like this, they are a liberal. Leftists would know that while leftism comes in very strong and different flavors, at the end of the day the destruction of capital is their primary goal.
Furthermore there's no coherent ideology you could encapsulate as distinct within Stalin's policies or theory. There's no Stalinism. The guy was like Lenin's biggest acolyte. Everything Stalin did was informed by what he thought Lenin would have wanted.
