So I have an iPhone SE (first edition) that's kind of old, needs some repairs, I cant get software updates, and, more importantly, hexbear doesn't work on it anymore. So I was thinking about a replacement and wondering what kinds of phones are similar. What I like about my current phone is the smaller form factor, which just feels more ergonomic to me. I wouldn't mind going a little bigger, but I really want a phone that's comfortable to use in one hand and keep in my pocket. I pretty much exclusively use my phone to browse the internet and read pdfs, so it doesn't need to be high-end (I think? Having a fast processor wouldn't make a difference for that, right?), I also don't care about the camera and I take a charger with me most places so the battery life isn't as important, but an oled screen would be nice. Other pluses would be a clean design and being able to last a couple years (my last phone before my current one was an iPhone 5, to give you an idea of how much I like change).
Basically I wan't something that's comfortable to hold in my hand and read posts on. Any suggestions?
Edit: Forgot, but a headphone jack is something I'd really like
I think that or the iphone mini might be my best option, but I was hoping there was something closer to my beloved se/iphone 5 available.
That one looks interesting. Do you know how long they're expected to last?
4 years security updates i think but these have good community roms.
iOS: iphone 12 or 13 mini
Android: pixel 5 or possibly one of the more recent asus zenfones like another person suggested
I have a unihertz jelly 2 and I love it. It keeps me from arguing on the internet with weirdos.
What about reading weirdos on the internet argue with each other? Also, I wasn't expecting a phone quite that small, but now I kinda want one, if just as a toy.
The Y1 is good https://www.odditycentral.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/12/Zanco-tiny-t1-750x563.jpg

The new se is about the same size as your first gen. The 14 is maybe a little bigger.
I like the old 4/5/original se size and the new se and 14 both feel good.
The adapter wires for corded headphones work great. I don’t often listen on corded headphones anymore but it was really nice to have a break point in the cable like the old minidisc headphones did. When they get snagged on something half the time the wire just disconnects instead of pulling the phones off my head or whipping the phone out of my pocket and across the room.
If I were you I’d get either a 14 or 12 mini. They’re both a little bigger but not enough to be significant. You’ll put a new square in your cycling jeans though.
I just haven’t used one enough to say it’s good. I’m sure it is.
The Sony Xperia 1 series, 5 series, and 10 series are pretty compact (funky aspect ratio though) and have 3.5mm headphone jacks. Dunno about where you live, but getting one might be a challenge.
Asus Zenphone as someone else suggested is also good, though I've heard mixed things about their software support.
I've got the mk.IV 5 series and agree with everything you said. It's a good phone but the android build kills apps super aggressively, it's very annoying. And it gets only 2 years of software updates if I remember right.
Asus ZenFone 10. Has a headphone jack, small form factor, and the latest, top of the line, Snapdragon 8 gen 2 chipset. A bit expensive though.
If you are okay with the idea of a folding screen, the latest Motorola Razr+/40 ultra flip phone is another good option. The outer screen allows any app to be run on it, and the outer display is a 3.5 inch screen with a square aspect ratio, so it's really compact. Or you can wait for the latest Samsung Galaxy z flip 5 to be released next month, it will also have a similar sized outer display.
