I’m sure they can just take your phone in that case and compel you to unlock it in the US or clone it or whatever.
Even SMS isn’t safe not only because of MITM attacks but I think ATT has the worst data retention policy like multiple years before deleting. The other carriers are better.
iirc (i am not a lawyer do not use me as legal advice) you cannot be compelled to unlock a phone in the US and can theoretically plead the 5th if they ask for a passcode, depending on the state. NJ Hexbears, don't even bother - you're fucked.
Biometrics are a different story from what I remember. They can certainly demand you put each finger on your home button, or look at the device while it tries FaceID.

a good reason to turn off your phone before going through a security checkpoint. on boot biometrics are only accepted after a password login
