also, anyone who has a good way of watching bashos (non-live, although i'm not even sure if the twitch channels i followed would still be going) please hmu

I have fallen off massively this year ever since the JSA cracked down/opened Sumo Prime Time and Kinta/Natto stopped posting videos. Even Chris (yes, i know he's a removed) has seemingly fallen off

Natto is still posting, but gets struck a couple times every basho so you have to search for it. They have a discord and I believe they also host on a parallel site somewhere to avoid takedowns, just watched the wrap up of this tournament this afternoon.

EDIT: Depending on how long it's been since you dropped you might not recognize the lineup at all. We've got a bunch of great new rookies, all the guys who debuted in the top division this tournament got double digit wins, one of them was tied for the yusho on the last day. Shodai and Mitakeumi aren't Ozeki anymore, Kiribayama is one now and has a new name (Kirishima), and this tournament we had three sekiwake who all had a shot at promotion as well. Looks like a lot of the old guard are dropping out and the new talent is rising. An exciting time to be following the sport, for sure!

I feel like I watched January and March maybe, but i just watched a Primetime video about the last day of July and i'm fucking baffled:

          • Who the absolute fuck is Hakuoho and how did they go from literally not existing to yusho race in 6 months?
          • Hokutofuji is in a playoff? How?!?
          • Hoshoryu finally made uncle proud and didn't bottle it? and now he might be Ozeki? Damn this rules.

I do remember Shodai finally becoming kill and i feel like Mitakeumi had either already dropped by that point or was 'Ozekiwake'.
Did Asanoyama ever make it back up? And what happened to the Waka boys?

Hokutofuji stronk, he was 10-0 earlier this year too, but that run got fucked when Takekeisho did a henka. Hakuoho (Ochiai) is another Hakuho apprentice, with his other two sekitori protege being Kiho (another tiny wrestler like Enho) and Hokuseiho (biggest wrestler, like 6'8''). Enho is out with an injury and won't be back for a while (and has already fallen to makushita, with people speculating he'll retire). Before this he was one basho away from returning to the top division and was looking strong.

Asanoyama had his bicep torn this basho but still got kk, so he's making steady progress back to sanyaku. Wakatakakage was injured and will be out for a year or so. Wakamotoharu just failed his ozeki run. Wakatakamoto is steadily rising through makushita, although I don't expect him to make juryo. Hoshoryu is 100% ozeki next basho. Uncle is proud but is still uncle. He added a picture of nephew's trophy to his own trophy case and criticized him for not winning sooner lol. The new ozeki Kirishima was injured and tried to fight through it, but will be kadoban next basho alongside Takakeisho. Terunofuji is injured again, having slipped a disk in training prior to this basho. He still had an AMAZING match with Tobizaru, resulting in something not seen since covid

Natto has the end on his youtube, tho he should still have most up on his discord telegram and rumble

oh god oh fuck, he's gonna dominate

              Hokuseiho (biggest wrestler, like 6'8'')

yeah I remember him coming up, beastman with a baby face

Enho is out with an injury and won't be back for a while (and has already fallen to makushita, with people speculating he'll retire). Before this he was one basho away from returning to the top division and was looking strong.

Now, this has me really sad, he was definitely in my boy stable.
This has also led me to find out that Ishiura has actually retired which is crushing, he was my tier 1 boy. At least he has become coach Magaki under Miyagino, which is nice.

He added a picture of nephew's trophy to his own trophy case and criticized him for not winning sooner lol.

Hakuoho did sumo non-professionally and was good enough to be allowed to start midway through Makushita, Endo did something similar way back when he first appeared. He did that 4 basho ago and has been burning through all the lower competition since, clearly belongs in the top, it's just a question of where his ceiling is. Also if you couldn't already tell, Miyagino (the former Hakuho) is signaling his faith in this guy's abilities with his ring name.

Is not sumo one of worst kinds of macho bullshit sports? I don't know if the urban myth about a combatant dying because a female paramedic could not enter the ring is true, but it sounds so bad that maybe it is? At least Tsuppari Oozumou Wii had female sumo wrestlers!

Let's hope the sport gets more progressive, or that I am a dullard speaking about something I know nothing about!

in 2018. wasn't a wrestler, it was the mayor of the town who was giving a speech from the ring. he had a stroke but survived.

Once again, I fell victim to Orientalist propaganda! Thank you for the info. Still, I want to see female sumo wrestlers, too! Does not everyone!?

You can say that for any of the primarily grappling focused martial arts / combat sports tho...

        Judo, jiu jitsu, wrestling, etc

If your interested is combat sports without the violence of mma / boxing/ other striking arts, check out a submission grappling event. ADCC have hosted the best graplers competing for years.

I always spend several hours in a rabbithole when I see it, bur I can never manage to consistently watch.

Also: The US sumo championship was held in a pyramid and that is rad as hell. SATURDAY, MAY 20, 2023 Walter Pyramid @ California State University Long Beach https://www.youtube.com/live/5GpS9uNraho?feature=share
