there's a million practical reasons to do that besides federation. The old site had major performance issues, probably some undiscovered security flaws, etc, and a codebase that nobody was familiar with as those devs left/stepped back.
And honestly, I get why people here are interested in staying walled off. I'm in favor of federation but there are valid concerns
