If I were to never touch GMail again and use Thunderbird for the rest of my life, would I need to change my adress to free myself from the deathgrip of google?

Free? Not really, sorry. I pay for my email now. The cheapest domain I could pick up, and hosted elsewhere (MS365 atm but looking to switch elsewhere when I quit being lazy about it.) domain was 12$ yearly for a .net and I pay 6 a month for email.

Give it a shot. I’m not sure what their storage limit is though so it may not be what you’re used to with gmail.

The only downside to protonmail I encountered is that the free plan doesn't include IMAP support, so you won't be able to integrate your protonmail to your non-proton mail client (Outlook, Thunderbird, your default phone mail client...)

If that's not an issue for you Protonmail seems pretty good :)
