As nobody could have predicted the headline is fake clickbait bullshit. I hate apple but this ain't it
What they actually recommend is not using a plastic sliding camera cover because it doesn't allow the lid to close fully which could damage the display if it shut hard. Nothing thicker than a sheet of paper is their official rec. They also recommend not using anything that would leave a sticky residue for obvious reasons.
Well I can only think of one use for a Webcam that'd result in sticky residue.
He clearly means cooking videos recorded with your laptop webcam
100% it's fake scaremongering
unless you're using extremely heavy duty tape or a hot glue gun or something, you cannot possibly do actual damage to a laptop by covering the camera(apparently there are cover things that can fuck your screen up, see comment below)
But the laptop breathes through the camera hole... you're asphyxiating it!
If the camera doesn't detect your face during use it sends a kill switch to all of your Smart devices and your house explodes.
Verification failed, pay verification fine or we will disable all electronics on your network
if the apple product can't see your face and calculate how happy you are living in apple's vibrant and singularly innovative ecosystem of technology products, apple will not be able to accurately recommend the correct apple product or service to optimize your enjoyment index.
the third-parties sell these little "web cam cover" stick-on things that are thick enough to cause a macbook air screen to crack if you slam the laptop shut or if it's under enough pressure
that strikes me as a "don't fucking slam your laptop shut" issue more than a "covering your camera" issue
fair enough (although see edit about pressure), but Apple still has to deal with replacing AppleCare customers' cracked screens so they are putting out an advisory not to use anything thicker than a sheet of paper
Nice laptop you've got there. Would be a shame if covering up the camera caused something to happen to it.
