I swear it wasn't this hard 15 years ago agony-wholesome

I would chalk it up to being chomsky-yes-honeyer but I can still jump into a random game of Gears of War and do okay, so who knows. I guess the skill ceiling in the old Halos is just much higher due to the battle-hardened diehard audience left playing them?

I think the current player base is diehard fans who have been playing for 20 years. Normies like us stand no chance bawllin-sad

Still a great split screen couch multiplayer game, though.

Not on the PC, it isn't, despite the constant calls from the PC userbase to add it in. I actually think the MCC team has done a great job with the game. They've gone above and beyond making a simple barebones PC port and added all kinds of fun additional content to the game, and they're still quietly chugging away at it. Just a shame the matchmaking can be so brutal.

There is the Custom Games Browser too, but most of the games on there seem to be weird Forge minigames and modded gamemodes. I just want a casual Slayer or Big Team Battle match from 2008 cowboy-cri

I guess you could try hosting your own game on the CGB but I haven't given that a shot.

Halo 1 was fun, but by god was that game not particularly well balanced.

Pistol is the second best weapon in the game and its in your starting gear? Everyone just races to the rocket launcher so you can compete to kill the newb who was stupid enough to get in the tank? Half an inch of foot sticking out from behind a wall is enough to take lethal damage from a sniper on the other side of the map?

I love the game, but holy shit. There are so many ways to die instantly.

That's all the Halos though, even if in the following games the rifles you start out with in most game modes aren't quite as busted as the pistol.

By Halo 2, someone cranked down the effective range of the pistol from "Infiniti" to "short" which made all the difference in the world. Also, the rifle was better at mid range and you wouldn't fire bullets in every direction except the place it was pointed. Pistol was marginally better mostly in the closed maps, but you were still scrambling for the better gear when you spawned.

I meant the rifles aren't as busted as the H1 pistol. In general the rifles are still so good that there's not that much incentive to pick up any of the non-power weapons, like the Plasma Rifle, or the Needler, or whatever.

Needler was very situational, but it worked well in close quarters against guys with full shields. Plasma rifle also worked well to close, because you could get their shields down quick and then go melee.

But otherwise, sure. The starting gear tended to be good enough that you didn't need weapons or vehicles to be effective. Honestly, one of the game's brighter points. Just... no pistols across the map, thank you.

Wow, you manage to live 10 seconds? I'm jealous. My friend wanted to play last time I visited him and I had a round with a 0:06 average life span die

I don't even want to think about my KD ratio desolate

Any of the 4v4 Slayer gamemodes, especially in 3 and Reach are a fucking slaughter. I've had some luck limiting myself to stuff like Oddball, Assault or Action Sack in 4v4, but you can still get stomped by guys advertising their Twitch under their gamertag. As much as I didn't care for Halo 4 when it came out, I've found that Halo 4 matches in the MCC tend to be more casual. Conversely Halo 3, my favorite multiplayer, can be nigh unplayable even in BTB sadness

I struggled a lot when I first picked it up but if you commit it'll all start coming back to you. Unless you've decided to play Halo 1, then you don't stand a chance against their godly tech and game knowledge.

I wonder if my issues are made worse by the fact that I'm on mouse and keyboard. I feel like my headshot weapons are not hitting anything and the giant reticles feel kind of awful on mouse and keyboard paired with no aim assist. I try to put the giant crosshairs over my enemies' heads and it feels like my shots are landing all over inside the circle. Meanwhile I'm getting perfectly fourshotted constantly kitty-cri

The Halo 3 Battle Rifle feels especially terrible on PC in 2023 where it felt pretty snappy way back when. To be fair, I've never been an accurate shot and the reason I do better at Gears might be because it's mostly about dashing right up to someone's face or back and gibbing them with a hip fired shotgun

I don't think I can acclimate back to controller. It's a shame the aim assist is what it is since mouse and keyboard feel so good in Campaign and Firefight.

It's also weird to me that of the two Xbox franchises I used to play, it's Gears of War that's easier to play on mouse and keyboard when one is a standard FPS and the other a third person shooter with quirky movement mechanics revolving around animation cancels
