I'm not saying I'm definitely right. And sure, the libs deserve the dunking. I look back to when I was a lib and I cringe at the shit I used to say. I'm certainly not thinking "oh why were they mean to me when I said something totally sexist", and honestly fuck anyone that puts their short term feelings above the oppression of a marginalised group.

That said, I think that some Hexbear peeps might be enjoying the now long-lost experience of dunking on libs. I get it, it's fine, I would too. I'm just wondering if we can tone down the insults and PPB, especially in other instances. I would really stick to informed discussion if possible. I'm not reading comments in too much detail, so maybe I'm wrong. I'm seeing a lot of people here put in a ton of genuine effort, and those posters get a order-of-lenin from me.

I have seen Lemmygrad posters complain (nicely) about the level of PPB and shitposting in non shitposting communities. Frankly I think the deserve a bit of respect in their communities. Their culture isn't the same as ours. I love you guys, but PPB is really only funny in Hexbear.

I sorta feel like a mass defederation is just a matter of time regardless of what we do. Maybe I'm just being hopeful that we can make this thing work. Dunno, you don't have to fully agree with me. But for me personally, I would post a lot more carefully with non Hexbear users.

Edit: let me reiterate that the libs do deserve the dunking

If they come here, go Mad Max on 'em.

If you go there, be on good behavior (unless they are very obviously a chud, screeching about "woke" and stuff)

When you post PPB in another instance, it's not just the person you're replying to who will see it, and the rest of them aren't desensitized to it. Be selective about when you drop a tactical PPB.

Edit: OK I said this and then 20 mins later posted PPB on another instance BUT I his it behind a link AND the user was asking for a list of instances that, "tolerate basic slurs"

I didn't want to blow the link's cover so I'll say it here: excellent ppb in that thread

I just did a PPB in another thread because some lib got upset at all the replies to the question of "what historical scams went unnoticed for too long". It felt justified considering the replies were things like "Obama, capitalism, bitcoin, bernie madoff" and that was what was making this one user upset.

      My first ever PPB too.

Yeah, I think people are a little hair trigger on the bullying. Personally I think the best way to do it is to give them one layer of helpful explanations, and see if they reply in bad faith.

    Lib shit

    Actually that's racist/propaganda/etc and here's why

    You're a CCP bot

Hog out or log out, PPB, etc

Ya I wouldn't kill yourself with being nice if they're obviously not taking the discussion seriously.

I like this- PPB is only for people who are either obviously reactionary shills from the first comment, or people who refuse to back down from reactionary shit when confronted.

I do think if someone posts liberal drivel it's fine to post a few of these the-democrat liberalism neera

Don’t be needlessly cruel but don’t be “civil” for the mere sake of it. Many people on the internet are marginalized IRL (disproportionately true for spaces like Hexbear which are accepting of gender nonconformity and communism) and it can feel good to turn it on others when we’re all just usernames shouting into the void. Be the better person, always assume you are speaking to a relative, your past self, or future friend/comrade and not a mortal enemy.

Yeah I think maintaining federation as long as possible to get as many stray libs into our zone as possible is a good thing.

yeah, dunking and PPB is for bad faith ppl who come to HB. be informative and communicate clearly on other instances. the only reason i can see for federating w these lib instances is to educate and agitate (not agitate them personally, but agitate them against capitalism). we cant do that if we get defederated within a week of interacting w them. also maybe dont joke abt conducting ddos attacks. some lemmy.world users took that and ran w it to denounce us further. be earnest and understand not everyone has had the same exposure to socialist education as us

Hear, hear... although I'm not entirely sure toning it down is effective in the long run; maybe the effects are actually reverse. While Lemmygrads mostly keep their insults to their own comms for the stray lib or troll, and maintain a diplomatic stance when conversing in foreign comms, they're still blocked by many instances (https://fba.ryona.agency/?domain=lemmygrad.ml). Once you "debate" too well, your instance will get noticed as the "serious tankie instance" instead of the PPB instance and risk defederation more? IDK.

I do agree with you. I just think, as the party outside of the power structure, we gotta be yet more thoughtful than the other side. This is just a vibe more than an analysis, so I'm not gonna push this too hard.

My approach in the broader federation is going to be this:

    1. Freely and viciously dunk on public figures. "Joe Biden's brain is pudding, and that evil asshole has no fucking business deciding what to have for dinner, let alone holding the highest office on the planet, and I'll celebrate his eventual death from natural causes with a month-long party."

    2. Educate posters with facts. Be as civil as is reasonable, but don't fetishize civility. "Your respect for Joe Biden is a mistake, and here's why."

    3. If the poster is 100% confirmed to be a public figure, see #1. "Joe Biden, I hope you spend your final years in untreatable pain."

Depends, if they're doing the whole "You're a tankie Chinese bot!" thing or the tired "Vuvuzela gorillion dead no iPhone!" shit, I'll reply however I want.

I will behave as I did on the old sub: I will be as nice as they are, as mean as they are, as thoughtful as they are, or as dumb as they are.

Yeah, I feel like doing it in other instances is a bit much

When they come onto our turf and start lib posting though, then the PIGPOOPBALLS comes out in full force

I also think a lot of the dunking has sucked. I get everyone's hard for the opportunity, but there's been some pretty weak shit. A lot of jumping the gun before someone has even made themselves look bad and acting like they're super owned.

Gotta agree. There are even some people I've seen trying to make fights over posts that actually didn't say anything wrong. And lemmygrad had the same problem before the Reddit Influx.

Also when there are like two people who come into a thread and a hundred posts laughing at them and congratulating ourselves, it doesn't actually look that cool.
