I tried learning WP a few weeks ago from like the ground up. So all the PHP composable stuff and logic, all the JS needed on frontend, the structure, etc. Like not just editing a theme type deal. I got like 30% into the course and just couldn't anymore. I think it might be impossible to go back to the "old ways" when you've been playing with modern web frameworks for most of the year. Boy, WordPress(and PHP) fucking suck. And it's not even really PHP because I've written a bit, this is just WP's own custom functions and some normal looping and conditionals where the syntax barely even matters and anyone can come from another lang and mostly be fine. Someone make a less bulky WP clone using any other lang, with all the customization and a better fucking lang lol.

It's one of those platforms that grew way past it's codebase so now it's a huge mess. Like all massively adopted platforms we're stuck with maintaining 10-year-old websites where an update can cause that free plugin you added in 2012 to just randomly Bork the whole site because PHP doesn't gracefully fail. Fun times!

      I need a new career 😩

One of the hopeful benefits of trying to do freelance is that I got to pick the framework. I just hope AstroJS stands the test of time but I'll be maintaining my own stuff and I don't use a ton of modules so I think I'll be ok? But also 10 years from now, no one will be using it but me so that might be good or bad... It's easy to pick up and I got a tiny bit of React knowledge along the way so I'll prob be fine.

But like also 40% of the web is WordPress and I'm dreading someone asking me to fix their site or something.
