I listened to this TrueAnon episode, and it got me in the mood to talk about folk music. My favorite folk singer is Jean Ritchie. What's yours?
Pete Seeger for old unionist school folk, Phil Elverum/Mount Eerie for modern experimental folk-influenced stuff, Panopticon for leftist black metal folk/bluegrass
I should also mention that I picked up a graphic novel about Woody Guthrie at a bargain shop last year, and it was a really interesting, enjoyable read.
That sounds really cool I'm gonna have to see if the local bookstore has it.
Anyone else like to sing? I'm no soloist, but singing is one of my favorite things to do. I think one of the things that makes me love folk music is that you can sing songs a cappella while you're washing your dishes and it sounds like something, whereas if you sing more modern songs without accompaniment or backup singers or anything, it tends to sound pretty boring. Like, I can listen to the music in my head and sing along with the instruments that only I can hear, but it just isn't the same.
Not sure if it quite counts as folk music but I really love Devil Makes Three
I'd never heard of them, so I listened to a couple songs and liked them a lot! I don't know that I'd call them folk exactly, but they're definitely in that realm. One song I listened to by them I'd call bluegrass, but the other was harder to pin down--but that's fun, right?
Yeah they're kinda all over the place but definitely have some heavy folk influences. Tow is one of my favorites as well as To The Hilt
For someone a bit newer, how about Charlie King. I've been kissed by a communist cracks me up every time. Also, there is a wall is some pretty inspirational shit.
