    one time I was trying to explain what people who study human geography read about and giving the example of "internal colonialism" to a college sophomore and they said, "oh like hunger games!"

    which is a pretty on-the-nose connection to make, because I was using the coal wars as an illustration.

    the surprise was that the dystopian novel didn't really build the world so much as lift it whole cloth from reality and make the material relationships explicit and obvious everywhere one could look.
