pseudo-religious nativist movement associated with the 1990s rise in qigong practice & all of its associated self-reflective cultural & ethnocentric results.

a lot of this stuff resulted in some confusing "alternative lifestyle & medicine" kookiness that disrupts education & scientific understanding. so when this particular group was banned, (after initially being promoted by officials as healthy exercise & self-discipline) Falun Gong took a really hardline anti-CPC stance, and i think were picked up early on in "the West" as a group to promote.

they run the Shen Yun dance troupes that periodically tour metro areas in the West. It's an anti-communist cult. There's a part in the Shen Yun production where these ninjas with hammer & sickle designs on their tunics pop out and they try to make it seem like they're harvesting the poor apolitical Chinese flow arts practitioners' eyeballs.

The weirdest thing is probably that the Falun Gong cult is super into qigong "magical" or supernatural abilities. Think jhanas, little parlor tricks you pick up on as you progress to enlightenment. The weird thing about that is, by all accounts, China was studying these abilities very intently for a long stretch in the twentieth century. If it's anything like the US programs, it's probable these studies continue today under different projects and names. That's pretty weird, but true enough.

          "this guy does good stuff"

Explicitly advancing imperialist and anti-communist talking points isn't "good stuff". Even if he has a good critique of Falun Gong, you shouldn't be endorsing reactionaries.

they like em. Which is kinda one of the few things I that make me realized that china has problems I can't begin to understand. Cause while they have them as both sport and cultural resources they really don't seem to like MMA at all.
