I used to do hella backpacking. I've been face to face (3-4ft) with a juvenile black bear who was sniffing my camp partner's barf in the tent rain-fly bodega thing. Actually, I saw like five bears that trip, they look like big fat black labs. Haven't encountered a grizzly, even when in MT/WY/ID
Black bears are easily more afraid of humans than we should be of them. The only issue you'll run into is if you fuck with them or get near a mother's cubs. They'll steal your food, sure, but if you just leave them be and don't make them feel trapped they're not really violent.
We did a trip in yellowstone and our rope to tie food up shredded on the first day so we had to leave our gear just out in the open (no bear canisters). Luckily we didn't meet any bears that time but I slept poorly knowing I may wake to a grizzly
