    Like most right wing people with terrible hair (Donald Trump, Boris Johnson, Javier Milei, etc) it's pre-emptive deflection. If you're busy criticizing their haircut, you aren't busy criticizing their message. They can then turn to moderates and say "look at those bullies attacking my appearance, but they don't think my message is bad, only my haircut!" and this humanizes them to onlookers who don't understand political ideologies or follow current events (the vast majority of people).

      I think that this argument gives the wearers of these haircuts too much credit. Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity and all that.

        I think there is sort of a natural selection - right-wing politicians with ridiculous appearance manage to appeal to moderates better, so they stay and new right-winger adopt their look.
