Nintendo's the Disney of bideo bames, but I do have to accept Mario games are generally quite good and don't get stuck in narrative ruts the way mainline Zelda titles tend to be for me (The Minish Cap was nice).
If every Mario game was shackled to some prophecy from Mario 64 about how Mario must always go through the windows and paintings of the castle (of the kingdom that gets blown up or flooded or otherwise undone/reset over and over again), must always collect the stars, must always rescue Peach from Bowser for all time and across the multiverse over and over again forever and ever and that only Mario can wahoo and yippee and jump on stuff and punch bricks because only he has the Mushforce of Letsago, I'd think less of the series.
I feel like after Super Mario Wonder and The Thousand Year Door did so well, Nintendo has finally allowed their dev team get wacky with Mario games again. I hope this is the case and that Nintendo go back to that pre-WiiU era of experimentation and weirdness.
But than again private companies and capitalism gonna be safe and dumb because investors no like. So who knows, maybe it will suck and be another Paper Jam.
