Humans domesticated dogs tens of thousands of years ago. People in apartments, trailers, suburbs, rural areas, homeless people and probably people in any other kind of housing situation I'm not thinking of all have dogs. Hunter gatherers had dogs. Keeping dogs as companions predates civilization.
yeah those dogs had an actual role other than staring out the condo window alone for 23 hours a day
