Just Vienna had elections? Or are there local elections in the whole of Austria right now?

Also, for us unfamiliar with Austrian politics, which party is fash?

EDIT: nevermind, FPO right? Since they're the ones with -20.

EDIT 2: What happened between April and November 2017? Just saw polling and FPO was way ahead at 40% in April 2017, and then suddenly it started collapsing (finished 2017 with 20% support, and eventually got 7% in the election).

FPÖ promised a Russian oligarch governement contracts if they'd generate positive news stories for the party. They were so obviously corrpt, that they started losing in the polls. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ibiza_affair

The whole government resigned after the affair and there were new elections, in which the FPÖ lost a lot of votes, but the ÖVP won most of them

Yeah, but now in Vienna most people who previously voted vor FPÖ stayed home or voted blank. OVP won a little bit, but a lot less then FPÖ lost.

FPÖ and HC are both fash. After the Ibizagate thing HC Strache, the vice-chancelor, split from the FPÖ and ran for the local Viennese election. With less than 4% he's not getting into the local government, which is great news

The SPÖ is better locally than on the national scale, due mostly to Vienna's socialist tradition ( Red Vienna ), but they're still succdems yes

          They're Christian conservatives.

Why they gained so many votes?
Basically, nationally they now hold the same positions on migration and such as the FPÖ(extreme right-wing party), so a lot of people I assume voted for the ÖVP instead after the whole Ibiza affair and all.

so roughly half the fash just changed branding from fpo to ovp? that uh.. sucks.

incoming ovp-fpo-grune alliance to fuck with the spo?

im unfamiliar with viennas politics but thats what i would wager

No, Vienna will stay red, IMO it is most likely they will seek a coalition with the Greens.

Theoretically, the ÖVP/FPÖ/Green/Neos could have enough seats, but the Greens wouldn't ally with the FPÖ, that is not going to happen because they are too openly fash.

Edit: Btw, they are currently in a coalition in Vienna already, that is SPÖ/Greens.

                :soviet-hmm:

if the greens are willing to ally with the conservative christian party, it doesnt sound unreasonable theyd tack seats on by pandering to the fash, but youd know better than me as to how viable that is for them politically.

                thanks for the info!

That would be a complete PR disaster for them if they tried that, especially because there is no need for that.
Ideologically they are a lot closer to the SPÖ anyways, they formed a coalition on a national level with the ÖVP only out of sheer pragmatism and lack of alternative partners.

And just to add, there is still quite a difference in public perception when it comes to the ÖVP/FPÖ, because although they are on the same page on almost every issue the ÖVP is a lot better at disguising their intentions.

Gut, geschieht denen recht. Wünschte jetzt das gleiche würde mit der AfD in Detuschland passieren.
